WASHINGTON – Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus and Co-Chairman Sharon Day released the following statement congratulating President Ma Ying-jeou on his reelection victory in Taiwan:
“On behalf of the Republican National Committee, I congratulate President Ma of Taiwan on his reelection,” said RNC Chairman Reince Priebus.
“As our Party’s platform states, Taiwan is a ‘sound democracy and economic model for mainland China.’ Under President Ma’s leadership, Taiwan has been a loyal ally to the United States and a beacon of freedom in Southeast Asia. America and Taiwan are united in our shared belief in fair elections, personal liberty, and free enterprise. It is critical that we continue to strengthen our relationship with Taiwan in the years ahead.”
“The Republican Party has been steadfast in our support for Taiwan and its right to self-defense,” said RNC Co-Chairman Sharon Day. As expressed in both our platform and in a resolution passed at our 2012 Winter Meeting, America’s foreign policy must reflect that support. And today, with Taiwan once again proving to the world the strength of their democracy, America should continue to stand with Taiwan.”
