RNC Chairman Reince Priebus:
“This hardly merited a nationally televised address to a joint session of Congress. More speeches, more words and more hot air from this president is not what America is looking for.
“If Obama’s past speeches are any indication, tonight’s will fall short. Time and time again, Obama’s speeches have offered little substance and plenty of disappointment…
“But it isn’t just that it’s political, the problem that this president has is that his policies are what is hurting America.
“From what the White House has leaked so far, it appears like his speech will recycle much of the same tired ideas they’ve put forth before. Despite one failed stimulus, the President wants even more deficit spending and tax hikes to pay for it only after he leaves office.
“More of the same is not going to produce a different result. Even Democrat Senator Dick Durbin from the President’s home state of Illinois has his doubts about the proposal he’ll unveil tonight. He summed up Obama’s plan this way: “Keep your fingers crossed.”
“In the less than eight months since Republicans took control of the House, our new majority has passed numerous bills to spur economic growth, but the President continues to prioritize campaigning for reelection and promoting the liberal agenda over fixing our economy.
“That’s why it is so important that we change direction and make Barack Obama a one-term president.”
Fmr. CBO Director Doug Holtz-Eakin:
“These are all ideas which have been seen in the past. There’s nothing new on the policy front. And indeed, many of them are in current law, so it wouldn’t even constitute new stimulus even from the perspective of the Administration…
“When Macroeconomic Advisors, a private firm that has done analyses that have been by and large been favorable to the President’s policies, when they looked at a package like this they saw very little impact – under 40,000 jobs a month. Certainly not enough to move the needle on a stubborn 9.1 percent unemployment rate…
“This is going to be more of the same. It’s neither been economically productive nor has it delivered the jobs that Americans need and I think a different strategy would be much preferred.”
