The Republican Party of Stanislaus County is committed to the principles of the Republican Party. We are the party of smaller government, lower taxes, individual freedom, strong national security, respect for the sanctity of life, traditional marriage, the importance of family and the exceptionalism of America.
THE 2010 ELECTION SEASON
The June 8th Primary Election presents some unique opportunities as well as challenges for voters in Stanislaus County. With the "retirements" of Senator Dave Cogdill and Congressman George Radanovich, along with the expiration of Senator Jeff Denham's term in the State Senate, we will have four open seats. Assemblyman Tom Berryhill has announced that he will be a candidate to succeed Senator Cogdill, creating an open race for the 25th Assembly.
Five Republicans have announced that they will be candidates to succeed the Assemblyman. In alphabetical order, they are Former Modesto City Council member Janice Keating; Tuolumne County Supervisor Terri Murrison; City Council member Kristin Olsen; Radanovich field representative and former Turlock City Council member, Kurt Vander Weide; and Riverbank City Council member Jesse James White. The winner of that contest will be on the November ballot.
Senator Denham announced that he will be a candidate to succeed Congressman Radanovich in the 19th Congressional District. There are two other Republicans in that race from the Fresno area plus former Congressman Richard Pombo. The winner of that contest will be on the November ballot.
Each of the candidates has a website. Soon you will be able to access all the candidates at the Committee site: www.stanislausgop.org.
We have our work cut out for us keeping the 12th Senate District in the Republican column but with Ceres Mayor Anthony Cannella as our candidate, we stand a good chance. He is working daily, raising money, getting endorsements and meeting voters.
On the local scene, all the county constitutional offices will be up for election or re-election in June. Dave Cogdill has already announced that he will run for Assessor. Stephen Smith is on the verge of announcing that he will run for Auditor/Controller. District Attorney Birgit Fladager will stand for re-election as will Clerk Recorder/Registrar of Voters, Lee Lundrigan. Sherriff Adam Christianson is also asking voters for another four-year term. There will be two supervisor district contests. Supervisor Dick Monteith has announced that he will seek a second term in District 4. There will be an open contest for District 3 with one Republican in that race now and that is Terry Withrow.
Additionally, there will be contests in all the cities in the county except Modesto and Ceres for mayor and/or city council. The Modesto Chamber of Commerce, The Modesto Bee, the Democrat Party and the Republican Party are sponsoring a Campaign Workshop on Wednesday, February 10th at the Modesto Library. There will also be a Nuts and Bolts session in June. For more information and to register, please call the Chamber at 209-577-5757.
After the June 8th Primary your county Republican Party will have a campaign office. It is our fervent hope that each of you will want to work with us to elect the Republicans on the November ballot. The Republican Party does not endorse candidates for partisan offices in the Primary. Once the Primary is behind us, we support the Republican that the voters elect to be our candidate for all partisan offices. Watch the website and the Modesto Bee for the announcement of the location and hours of operation.
In California, each political party has a Constitutional right to choose how candidates are selected for the General Election. The Republican Party has consistently chosen to restrict voting to registered Republican voters. If you have friends or relatives, especially in the Tea Party movement, who are registered as Decline to State, Independent or whatever, they will not have the opportunity to vote for the Conservative candidates our party will have on that primary ballot. Please, please, encourage him/her to re-register with our party. Forms can be picked up at our office or mailed to them. Call the office.
